Every school should have a bully prevention/intervention program, and of course, see that it is used/reinforced by everyone.

I was reading a lot about bullying in the social media as I was researching this, actually. I think the same things can help students on the social media front as well-- strengthening their self-esteem and such. Some schools have a mandatory suspension policy for students who are caught engaging in cyberbullying. But social media is so pervasive and so hard to police. So far, my sister has just kept her teenage and preteen children from having access to social media sites to keep them away from the possible dangers, including bullying. Social media can be such a powerful tool, though, that it seems a shame to have to exclude students from it. I'll definitely keep reading up on this issue.

I was actually thinking the same thing! I definitely think a two-part effort to address the issue would be best-- identifying and helping the bullied students AND identifying and helping the bullies. There are so many complex reasons why students become bullies, but I'm sure there are tips that can help teachers and parents reach out to at least some of them. I'll look into that!

Thanks for the tips. Such an important topic right now. In addition to Shar's question (tips for bullies on NOT bullying), I'd be interested in how to bully-proof kids on the social media front.

bullying can be so hard to deal with. having a list of things to look for is so helpful for teachers AND parents. now i'm curious to find good tips on helping the kids who are the bullies to have more positive interactions with their peers.

Good article. For teachers, SEL (social / emotional learning) is a great program, especially when implemented in grade school. It can really help develop empathy and interpersonal communication skills. For parents of bullied children, I can recommend an excellent course called "The Total Bully Solution" by Adam Blum
