Why schools need social media — Reason #10: Because it’s not going away

Why should we use social media in our schools?

There are many reasons, but, aside from how it can help students and families take a more active part in education, we can’t ignore the fact that social media has taken a permanent place in our culture.

In 2007, 96 percent of students with online access had used a social networking site. Even more surprising, 60 percent of these students had discussed education topics online, and 50 percent directly discussed their schoolwork.

These stats, which have undoubtedly risen in subsequent years, demonstrate students’ willingness to combine social media with education. And if they’re so willing, who are we to stop them?

Thanks, J! Glad you enjoyed it. I’d love to hear how the schools you’re working with respond to some of these methods.
