6 tips for teaching in a diverse classroom

How much do you know about the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of your English learners? According to one researcher, this knowledge plays a key role in successfully teaching students for whom English is a second language.

In her article published in 2000, Arlette Ingram Willis says, “Effective literacy instruction builds upon the cultural and linguistic backgrounds, ways of making meaning, and prior knowledge that all children bring to the classroom. Such instruction also acknowledges the important role of culture in language and literacy learning. Understanding and respecting the array of different cultures and languages represented in their classrooms helps educators adopt strategies for teaching literacy that will encourage and support student achievement.” In other words, it is as important to know the student as it is to know the subject matter.

How I caught my children reading

May is Get Caught Reading Month — how do you plan to celebrate? If only your children would put down the video game controller, stop texting a friend, or turn off the cartoons and pick up a book. Believe it or not, I recently witnessed this happen in my own family with no coercion, or even prompting, from my wife or me.

A couple of weeks ago, my three stepchildren started a nightly ritual that I’ve watched with amazement. Sometime after dinner one of them calls out to the others, “It’s reading time!” Then they gather in the family room with one of their favorite books and take turns reading to each other for an hour or so. They’ve already read three or four books, and they’re still going strong. They seem to genuinely enjoy the time they’re spending together stimulating each other’s imaginations.
