A Year-Long Project in Community-Based Learning
Our high school literacy core curriculum is designed around a year-long project in community-based learning. Students establish, build, and expand their learning community—forming a group that shares a common learning journey throughout the year.
Foundation Unit

- Begins each year
- Explores a significant question, like what does it mean to be an American?
- Students establish norms and goals as members of learning communities
- Teachers get insight into students’ incoming skills
Developmental Units

- Learning Communities develop knowledge, habits
- Multi-genre collections feature anchor texts or topical text sets
- Students analyze texts to develop and understand perspectives
- Understanding is expressed via discussion, presentation, analysis, and writing
Application Unit

- Completes each year
- Inquiry-based research driven by student interest
- Teachers guide students through the research process
- Students work individually or in research teams
- Students present their topic to the broader learning community

Building bridges

ELL support
Our ELL toolkit supports English learners with over 150 targeted mini-lessons designed to develop the academic language skills needed to access core instruction, gain confidence in reading and other subjects, participate and engage with other students effectively.
