Imagine Learning Acquires CueThink: Enhancing AI-Powered Problem-Solving and Collaboration in K–12 Education

Imagine Learning announced the acquisition of CueThink, an AI-powered problem-solving and collaboration platform designed to improve students’ critical thinking skills.

Tempe, Arizona – June 4, 2024– Imagine Learning, the largest national provider of digital curriculum solutions serving over 15 million students and one million educators, announced today the acquisition of CueThink, an AI-powered problem-solving and collaboration platform designed to improve students’ critical thinking skills. This acquisition is pivotal as it addresses the growing need to prepare students for real-world challenges in the age of AI.

Addressing Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills in Education

In today’s educational landscape, moving beyond rote memorization and standardized testing is crucial — research shows that critical thinking is a key skill for success. According to the World Economic Forum, critical thinking and problem-solving are among the top skills needed for the future workforce. As AI continues to evolve, the ability to think critically will be essential for navigating and leveraging these technologies effectively.

CueThink’s structured, four-phase approach (Explore, Plan, Solve, Review) breaks down complex problems into manageable steps, which ensures that students become active problem-solvers capable of adapting to diverse challenges and future AI-driven environments.

Integration with Imagine Learning

“We welcome CueThink to Imagine Learning as we continue to invest in AI-enabled education and curriculum tools,” said Jonathan Grayer, Chairman and CEO of Imagine Learning. “Our focus is clear: to employ a range of artificial intelligence innovations that positively impact teaching, learning, and parental involvement. CueThink’s innovative approach to problem-solving and collaboration is transformative, and we are excited to see how these tools will enhance our curriculum offerings and improve educational outcomes.”

CueThink provides:

  • Personalized interventions: real-time, adaptive scaffolds designed to promote desired behaviors and positive outcomes
  • Innovative assessments and reports: new methods to measure engagement, creativity, and student thought processes
  • AI supports: AI technology providing metacognitive training and interactive chat tools to help guide educators

Imagine Learning plans to initially incorporate CueThink’s application within its math offerings, supporting its commitment to High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM). Additionally, Imagine Learning will integrate CueThink’s AI-powered technology across other disciplines, focusing on collaborative social learning experiences. This integration will enable Imagine Learning to offer a peer-to-peer social element within its curriculum for the first time.

Sheela Sethuraman, CEO of CueThink, said, “CueThink was designed with utmost consideration for students and their unique strengths. Our solution enables all students to fully express their creativity, collaborate with peers, and become confident problem solvers — while also guiding and empowering educators. We’re thrilled to join Imagine Learning, a leader in personalized learning, and look forward to collaborating with them to drive positive outcomes through inclusive R&D approaches and the power of AI.”

Two Imagine Language & Literacy® Studies Receive Evidence for ESSA Promising Rating; Program Celebrates 20 Years of Helping Students Strengthen Literacy Skills

Imagine Language & Literacy Celebrates 20 Years of Impact on Student Literacy Skills and Receives Evidence for ESSA Rating for Two New Studies

Tempe, Arizona – May 29, 2024 – Two research studies from Imagine Learning received Promising ratings from Evidence for ESSA for measuring the impact of Imagine Language & Literacy, the flagship supplemental literacy program, as it celebrates 20 years of accelerating the development of literacy skills for students. These studies add to the extensive body of research showing the impact of using Imagine Language & Literacy on student literacy outcomes.

Evidence for ESSA evaluated two studies measuring the effectiveness of Imagine Language & Literacy to improve English language proficiency for English language learners (ELL). The first study took place during the 2022–2023 school year in a large Louisiana school district. The academic performance of more than 1,000 students in first through fifth grade was measured by Louisiana’s English Language Proficiency Test. Overall, the performance of Imagine Language & Literacy students was significantly higher than the control group.

The second study, also conducted during the 2022–2023 school year, assessed literacy proficiency outcomes for more than 2,500 Florida students in first through fifth grade, using the WIDA ACCESS assessment and more than 1,500 students in grades four and five using the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST). Students who used Imagine Language & Literacy demonstrated significantly greater growth than academically and demographically similar non-users on both the WIDA ACCESS and the FAST assessment. The significant results in both studies qualify for the ESSA Promising category and demonstrate the impact of Imagine Language & Literacy on student learning outcomes.

“This recognition from Evidence for ESSA is especially meaningful as we celebrate 20 years of Imagine Language & Literacy helping students gain proficiency in language and literacy skills,” shared Sarah Anderson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Supplemental Programs at Imagine Learning. “The program was built with leading experts on reading science well before the science of reading was a focus of discussion in education. Additionally, we know student engagement is key to student learning, so the rich content was developed on a video gaming platform. Now, 20 years later, we continue to engage students in learning as we lead the market with our depth and breadth of content.”

Coinciding with the achievement of receiving Evidence for ESSA Promising ratings, Imagine Learning is commemorating the 20th anniversary of Imagine Language & Literacy by adding new content and characters to the program and redesigning many favorite activities that students loved over the past two decades. In addition, three classrooms from across the US were chosen as winners of the Imagine Language & Literacy 20th Anniversary Classroom Makeover Contest, earning a classroom makeover by completing the recommended 20+ hours a week on the digital literacy program throughout the 2023–2024 school year. Imagine Learning Unveils Traverse Explorer, Empowering Students and Educators with Free Digital Social Studies Lessons

Offering Provides Equitable Access to Verified Digital Content to Inspire Civic Engagement for Grades 6–12

Scottsdale, AZ – April 15, 2024 – Imagine Learning, the largest national provider of digital curriculum solutions serving over 15 million students and one million educators, today announced the launch of Traverse Explorer, which provides free access to relevant lessons from their highly-anticipated, breakthrough core social studies curriculum. Traverse Explorer serves timely and grade-appropriate digital content directly to teachers and is designed to inspire students to become engaged and informed citizens. This free resource addresses the critical need for easily accessible and verified digital social studies lessons for millions of educators and students across the U.S.

“To foster a thriving democracy, it’s imperative that we cultivate an environment in which everyone has the opportunity to both understand and actively participate in the systems that govern our society,” said Sari Factor, Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer of Imagine Learning. “For too long, the education system has de-emphasized the importance of social studies and civics for students, often citing a lack of resources and competing priorities. Traverse Explorer is designed to address this gap by offering educators equitable access to digital curriculum, fostering critical thinking and inquiry skills essential for every student to become an active and educated citizen.” At this week’s ASU+GSV summit in San Diego, California, the topic will be discussed during a panel moderated by Factor titled “Civic Engagement in an Uncivilized Climate.”

A previous study by MRD Education found that teachers spend an average of seven hours per week searching for instructional materials and another five hours creating their own. Social studies resources, in particular, are challenging to find, with a RAND American Teacher Panel Insights Report stating that “most teachers reported a need for better civics instructional resources.” Streamlining teachers’ workloads is crucial, especially as the teacher shortage crisis worsens due to political polarization in education.

Designed to empower educators and inspire civic engagement in 6–12 grade students, Traverse Explorer:

  • Is supported by Imagine Learning’s standards-backed, inquiry-based curriculum, Traverse, and aligns with the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework.
  • Consists of lessons that contain multimedia materials, reliable sources, and collaborative learning activities designed to provoke thoughtful analysis and student engagement.
  • Engages students with compelling topics linking social studies to current events and practical knowledge, such as voting procedures and financial literacy.
  • Lessons will be derived from the five Traverse curriculum categories: U.S. History, World History, Government, Geography, and Economics.
  • Lessons will be timed to coincide with significant periods such as Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and election season.

“When crafting the Traverse curriculum, we recognized the transformative potential of digital, inquiry-based content grounded in current events, coupled with the ability to quickly update the resources as new developments unfold. Traverse Explorer represents a significant opportunity to disseminate this wealth of knowledge to as many students as possible, revolutionizing social studies across the nation,” said Dr. Kathy Swan, Ph.D., Professor of Social Studies at the University of Kentucky and curriculum author of Traverse.

Traverse Explorer will launch in June 2024 with five inaugural free lessons about Federalism and the U.S. Highway System (U.S. History), Commerce in Asia (World History), Using Cash versus Credit (Economics), First Time Voting (U.S. Government), and the Effects of El Niño (World Geography). New lessons will be made available monthly. For more information regarding Traverse Explorer and to sign up to be notified as soon as it is available, visit https://www.imaginelearning.com/traverse-explorer/.

Imagine Learning Launches AI-Enhanced Tutoring to Meet Demand for Personalized Support

AI-Driven Tutoring Tailored to Each Student’s Level and Interests

Scottsdale, Arizona – April 08, 2024 – Imagine Learning, the largest national provider of digital curriculum solutions, serving over 15 million students and one million educators, today announced the release of its AI-enabled tutoring platform. This latest development marks a significant step toward Imagine Learning’s goal of incorporating AI throughout its product portfolio and underscores its dedication to leveraging AI to enhance opportunity and access for every learner.

“At Imagine Learning, we firmly believe that embracing AI doesn’t replace human intelligence, it enhances it,” said Jonathan Grayer, CEO of Imagine Learning. “Rooted in this conviction, we’re confident that integrating AI will fuel purpose-driven learning and empower each student to unlock their full potential. Our new AI-enabled tutoring platform will deliver measurable impact to our students and allow us to meet the educational challenges we face today.”

A report published by Georgetown University in January 2024, titled “Learning Curve: Lessons from the Tutoring Revolution in Public Education,” highlights the positive impact of personalized tutoring within K–12 education and the critical need to deploy it at scale to meet the significant portion of students lacking sufficient academic support. Imagine Learning’s platform bridges this gap through key features like:

  • AI-enhanced tutoring with human guidance: Imagine Learning’s AI-driven communication system enables real-time, on-demand tutoring support accessible anytime, anywhere — adjusting to each student’s learning level, interests, and preferred language — to promote an interactive educational space. Alongside our AI capabilities, human tutors play a crucial role in guiding and enhancing the learning experience. They review AI recommendations and feedback, ensuring accuracy and relevance. This blend of AI efficiency with educator expertise highlights our commitment to a balanced, human-in-the-loop approach to personalized learning.
  • Interactive learning through AI-powered teaching: this feature allows students to play the role of teacher and explain concepts. This engaging interaction boosts learner knowledge and hones communication skills. By asking targeted questions and seeking clarifications, the AI-powered companion adjusts to the student’s explanations to foster a nurturing space for learning through teaching.

“The tutoring solution has the ability to transform learning for our students,” said Kinsey Rawe, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Courseware & School Services. “With personalized support and an engaging experience, we’ve seen remarkable improvements in performance and motivation.”

The AI-enabled tutoring platform is set to enhance a range of Imagine Learning’s offerings, including Imagine Edgenuity®, Imagine EdgeEX, Imagine MyPath®, and Imagine Math®, and is currently being piloted within Imagine Learning Illustrative Mathematics. This integration marks another significant milestone in Imagine Learning’s journey toward leading educational innovation, utilizing technology to support a future-ready generation.

Imagine Learning is committed to leveraging generative AI to support educators and enhance the educational experience of students. These advances are made with a deep commitment to ethical standards, focusing on protecting privacy, ensuring fairness, and creating an unbiased learning environment.

Imagine Español Meets ESSA Evidence Standard

Evidence for ESSA’s review of Imagine Español research indicates promising evidence of program effectiveness

Scottsdale, Arizona – February 22, 2024 – A research study from Imagine Learning, the largest provider of digital curriculum solutions in the U.S., received an ESSA Promising rating from Evidence for ESSA for measuring the impact of the Imagine Español learning solution on Spanish language acquisition and proficiency for Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) students.

The study, Impact Evaluation of Imagine Español in a Large Southwest School District, was designed to meet the qualifications of Tier 3 Promising evidence of effectiveness as defined by the Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) and demonstrates the significant impact Imagine Español has on Spanish language acquisition and proficiency.

“We’re pleased to see the research on Imagine Español students recognized by Evidence for ESSA,” shared Sarah Anderson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Supplemental Programs at Imagine Learning. “For students at such a young age, authentic and culturally relevant language instruction is vital to ensure students are learning effectively. We are honored to receive a Promising ranking and high honor.”

Imagine Learning partnered with a large Texas school district to evaluate how participation in Imagine Español impacted Pre-K student achievement in Spanish language acquisition and proficiency. In total, 3,347 Pre-K students who used the Imagine Español program were compared to 554 students who did not use the Imagine Español program. Pre-K students who used Imagine Español averaged 11 hours on the program and completed an average of 24 program lessons during the 2020–2021 school year.

This study was conducted retrospectively using data from the 2020–2021 school year. It evaluated the difference in Spanish language acquisition between students who used Imagine Español and students who did not use Imagine Español. Results show that, on average, students who used Imagine Español scored over 16 points higher on the Spring 2021 administration of the CIRCLE Progress Monitoring in Spanish assessment than did academically and demographically similar comparison students. This difference was both statistically significant and practically significant as it underscores students’ achievements with Imagine Español’s authentic Spanish language arts curriculum.

Evidence for ESSA vets educational research through rigorous review “to provide clear and authoritative information on programs that meet the ESSA evidence standards and enable educators and communities to select effective educational tools to improve student success.” Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 as the federal law governing K–12 education. Within the bill are stipulations supporting the use of federal dollars on educational programs with evidence of effectiveness.

Imagine Learning Foundation Opens 2024 Funding Cycle for Signature Grant Program

Embarks on Year Three of $5 Million Campaign to Fund Nonprofits Dedicated to Supporting Student Well-Being Outside of the Classroom 2024 Emphasis on Chronic Absenteeism and Student Homelessness Crisis

Scottsdale, Arizona – January 30, 2024 – Imagine Learning Foundation (ILF), the philanthropic initiative created by Imagine Learning, the largest provider of digital curriculum solutions in the United States, announced today the opening of the 2024 funding cycle for its Imagine Signature Grant program. Founded in 2022, ILF is entering the third year of its $5 million grant campaign and will award $400,000 or more in Imagine Signature Grants in 2024 to organizations dedicated to ILF’s mission of supporting the well-being of learners outside of the classroom, either at home or in their communities.

This year, ILF will place a special emphasis on sponsoring initiatives aimed at addressing both chronic absenteeism and the student homelessness crisis that are affecting students nationwide. These pressing issues were highlighted earlier this month in a statement by the Biden-Harris Administration announcing that increasing attendance is a key focus of their Improving Student Achievement Agenda in 2024. Chronic absenteeism, particularly for children experiencing homelessness, has severe consequences for learning, emotional well-being, stability, and future outcomes through a student’s life. According to the National Center for Homeless Education’s December 2023 report, over 1.2 million students identified as experiencing homelessness and approximately 52% were chronically absent during school year 2021-2022.

While ILF will prioritize funding to organizations working to support the needs of homeless students, ILF will also consider projects from other eligible entities aligned with ILF’s mission for the Imagine Signature Grant program.

“We are excited to enter our third year of continued financial commitment to invest in this critically important work across the communities we serve,” said Jonathan Grayer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Imagine Learning. “We have empirical evidence that students who receive devoted support, attention, and care outside of the classroom flourish academically and grow into vibrant members of society. However, none of that is possible without a safe and secure place to call home for each student. We are dedicated to combating the chronic student homelessness crisis and look forward to funding those programs that demonstrate an unwavering determination to transcend traditional learning environments with innovative solutions that improve students’ overall mental and physical well-being. We can’t wait to see the applicants for this grant cycle.”

The 2024 Imagine Signature Grant program will award grants to eligible applicants dedicated to any of these funding priorities:

  • 2024 Funding Priority: Supporting eligible organizations who are addressing vital issues concerning student housing insecurity and their basic needs along with the associated chronic absenteeism by students from their daily K-12 learning environments.
  • Other Mission-Aligned Programs: Supporting programs, activities or services fostering learning well-being of youth, families, and educators outside of the classroom and into their home and community environments.
  • Education and Community Research: Studying the current impact that social, physical, mental and emotional well-being has on accelerating student achievement across diverse communities, including students and youth experiencing homelessness and chronic absenteeism from their K-12 learning environments.

“The array of incredible organizations dedicated to learner well-being that we’ve encountered since forming the Imagine Learning Foundation has affirmed our belief that every student and those that support them can benefit from increased resources,” said Chris Graham, Chairman and President of the Imagine Learning Foundation. “We’re incredibly proud of all our previous grantees and their projects. Although, as we enter our third year, we know there has been a growing crisis for youth experiencing homelessness and chronic absenteeism from their learning environments. We are eager to partner with organizations tackling this issue.”

Previous Imagine Signature grant winners include Up2Us Sports, Erika’s Lighthouse, WPSU (Penn State University Philanthropic Fund), Our Minds Matter, Genesys Works, and Big Sky Youth Empowerment. Learn more about ILF’s grant recipients and programs here.

The 2024 Imagine Signature Grant program is now open for applications through March 29 and award winners will be announced in July 2024. The 2024 grant cycle is below:

  • Application Opens – January 30, 2024
  • Application Deadline – March 29, 2024 (11:59pm PST)
  • Award Notifications – June/July 2024
  • Grant Awards – July 2024

In addition to the Imagine Signature Grant Program, ILF also conducts its Grassroots Grant Program each year, which awards a series of smaller grants to organizations nominated by Imagine Learning employees that focus on out-of-classroom programs dedicated to learner well-being, such as student-driven kindness and anti-bullying messaging and after school programs shown to increase self-confidence, attendance rates, emotional well-being, and academic performance.

Districts Call for Guidance in Developing AI Policies for the Classroom, New Report Finds

Without federal regulation and few states guiding AI use, 47% of districts nationwide plan to develop their own AI policies

Scottsdale, Ariz., January 25, 2024 – Imagine Learning, the largest provider of digital curriculum solutions in the U.S., serving 15 million students in more than half the school districts nationwide, today released the findings from its new report, “The 2024 Administrator AI Report: Perceptions, Practices, and Potential in Education,” to identify administrators’ perceptions on the benefits and advantages of generative AI and benchmark its current rate of adoption.

To date, only two states have formulated a comprehensive AI policy absent federal guidance for districts to look to. Although several organizations such as the Consortium of School Networking, the International Society of Technology in Education, and the Council of the Great City Schools have released generative AI guidelines and best-use practices for K–12 educators and districts, according to the report, 47% of administrators are planning to implement comprehensive policies on their own and 54% have indicated they would also like help from education solutions providers to reduce risks and concerns associated with generative AI.

One-third of administrators also expressed a desire for education companies to publish and use a code of ethics when developing generative AI, while 36% plan to implement guiding frameworks for adoption and use within their schools.

These findings suggest the need for a strong call-to-action to increase technology use and services, as well as training and official guidance for safe AI implementation in schools, with education solution providers at the forefront of this push alongside schools.

Other notable findings from Imagine Learning’s report indicate the following sentiments and intentions from administrators:

  • AI’s Net Positive Outlook in Education: 64% of administrators believe generative AI will positively impact education, with only a minimal number (5%) planning to ban it.
  • Positive Student Engagement with Generative AI: The majority of students using generative AI use it ethically to improve knowledge, with research (70%), writing refinement (65%), and creating study aids (55%) as top uses.
  • Easing the Burden on Teachers with Personalized Learning and Efficiency: Over one-third of administrators recognize generative AI’s role in creating personalized learning materials and saving time, a significant priority in K–12 education.
  • Supporting Teachers and Curriculum Development: 50% see generative AI aiding in lesson planning, with notable contributions to idea generation and individualizing lesson materials that aid teachers in completing repetitive tasks, easing teacher burnout.

“Districts are willing to integrate AI into their classrooms, but currently lack the proper resources, governance, and training needed to do so successfully,” said Sari Factor, Chief Strategy Officer at Imagine Learning. “Our survey reveals a critical opportunity for shaping AI’s role in education. It’s a collective call to action, urging us to work alongside policymakers and education organizations to craft guidelines that ensure AI’s integration is as responsible as it is transformative.”

“This survey isn’t just about understanding AI’s role in education—it’s a roadmap for responsible implementation,” said Kinsey Rawe, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Courseware & Instructional Services. “By understanding firsthand how AI tools enhance teaching and learning, we’re poised to guide the development of policies that are both innovative and attuned to the real needs of educators and students in a digital-first learning environment.”

Consistent with recent findings from Imagine Learning’s 2023 Educator AI Report, both teachers and administrators recognize the potential for generative AI to alleviate much of the burden currently impacting teachers. To learn more about what administrators are saying about AI’s role in supporting teachers, please download the full report here.

Methodology

The survey consisted of responses from 163 K–12 education administrators who work in districts across the U.S. Imagine Learning conducted the survey from October 31–November 9, 2023, through an online, quantitative survey that was approximately 10 minutes in length. 71% of respondents were district administrators and 29% were school administrators.
