What Is Small Group Targeted Instruction?

small group instruction session

Imagine Learning’s Small Group Targeted Instruction (SGTI) delivers personalized, equitable online small-group instruction for grades K–12. Led by certified interventionists, each session provides targeted, data-driven support that helps students build confidence, accelerate growth, and meet their learning goals.

Why Partner with Imagine Learning for This Research

Imagine Learning invites school districts to participate in a national study evaluating the impact of Small Group Targeted Instruction on reading and math achievement. The findings will help your district — and schools nationwide — make data-driven decisions that improve student outcomes. As a research partner, your district will receive:

Targeted instruction by certified teachers

Half of participating students will receive SGTI for reading or math intervention. The remaining students will continue with their school’s current instructional approach.

What Participation Looks Like

Select students to participate in SGTI

  • About half of eligible participating students within schools and within grades receive SGTI for reading or math intervention.
  • Student selection may occur through random assignment or intentional grouping.
  • Students not receiving SGTI continue with their school’s current instructional supports.

Implement SGTI

  • Students attend all scheduled SGTI sessions with their interventionist.
  • They engage in instruction, discussions, and small-group learning activities.
  • Students complete brief pre- and post-formative assessments to measure growth.

Administer standardized assessments

  • Districts or schools administer standardized reading or math assessments in the fall, winter, and spring of the 2026–27 school year.
  • Any standardized progress-monitoring or benchmarking assessments that measure reading or math skills may be used.
  • All students in participating grades — both SGTI and non-SGTI — complete the same assessments as part of their normal school testing process.

Why Comparative Research Matters

Comparative studies — those that include both participating and non-participating groups — provide the most reliable evidence of a program’s effectiveness. This approach ensures that results are valid, meaningful, and can drive lasting improvements in education. Key benefits of this research design include:

Fair and reliable results

Including a comparison group allows researchers to accurately measure SGTI’s impact, ensuring findings are scientifically sound and reflective of student growth.

Opportunity for future program expansion

SGTI access may be expanded to additional students after the study concludes, allowing your district to implement the service with greater experience and confidence.

Continued support for all students

Even students who do not receive SGTI during the study will continue to benefit from their school’s existing high-quality instruction and supports.

Is Your District a Good Fit?

Districts that are a strong fit for this research study typically:

  • Serve medium-to-large student populations across multiple schools or grade levels
  • Can implement SGTI consistently with selected groups of students by following recommended practices
  • Administer standardized assessments in reading or math at least three times during the school year (fall, winter, and spring)
