What Is Traverse?

traverse curriculum on screens

Traverse is a comprehensive social studies curriculum for grades 6–12 that delivers robust content in history, economics, geography, and government, all in a flexible frameworkBuilt around the principles of High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM), Traverse ensures coherence, rigor, and accessibility while supporting inquiry-based learning that prepares students for civic engagement.

Why Partner with Imagine Learning for This Research

Imagine Learning invites school districts to participate in a national study evaluating the impact of Traverse on student social studies achievement. The findings will help your district — and schools nationwide — make data-driven decisions that improve student outcomes. As a research partner, your district will receive:

star

Access to Traverse for selected classrooms

Half of participating classrooms will implement Traverse for social studies instruction. The remaining classrooms continue with their school’s current instructional approach.*

Actionable data and insights

Receive detailed reports comparing outcomes for Traverse and non-Traverse students, giving your team powerful evidence to guide future instructional decisions.

A national impact

Contribute to research with the potential to transform education nationwide and support best practices in social studies instruction.

*After the study concludes, access to Traverse may be expanded to additional classrooms.

What Participation Looks Like

Select classrooms to implement Traverse

  • About half of eligible participating classrooms use Traverse for social studies instruction.
  • Classroom selection may occur through random assignment or intentional selection.
  • Classrooms not using Traverse continue with their school’s prior social studies curriculum.

Students use Traverse

  • Students complete all assigned units and lessons (including vocabulary previews, skill lessons, and chapter inquiries) within the course period.
  • Students engage with supplemental print or digital resources (e.g., Source and Skill Companion, Take Action prompts, inquiry tasks) to deepen understanding.
  • Participate fully in formative and summative assessments, including end-of-unit and end-of-course projects.

Administer an appropriate social studies assessment

  • Districts or schools administer an appropriate social studies assessment in the spring of the 2026–27 school year.
  • Districts may use any standardized assessment of U.S. History or Civics, such as a summative end-of-course exam.
  • All participating students — both Traverse and non-Traverse — complete the same assessments as part of their normal school testing process.

Why Comparative Research Matters

Comparative studies — those that include both participating and non-participating groups — provide the most reliable evidence of a program’s effectiveness. This approach ensures that results are valid, meaningful, and can drive lasting improvements in education. Key benefits of this research design include:

Fair and reliable results

Including a comparison group allows researchers to accurately measure Traverse’s impact, ensuring findings are scientifically sound and reflective of student growth.

Opportunity for future program expansion

Traverse access may be expanded to additional students after the study concludes, allowing your district to implement the service with greater experience and confidence.

Continued support for all students

Even students who do not receive Traverse during the study will continue to benefit from their school’s existing high-quality instruction and supports.

Is Your District a Good Fit?

Students studying together

Districts that are a strong fit for this research study typically:

  • Serve medium-to-large student populations across multiple schools or grade levels
  • Can implement Traverse consistently with selected groups of students by following recommended practices
  • Administer standardized social studies assessments at the end of the course or school year
