Even though English is the most widely spoken language in the United States, growing populations with limited-English-language skills are presenting challenges—and opportunities—for educators everywhere.
The need to learn English is growing
With information from the American Community Survey and the National Center for Education Statistics, NationalJournal recently posted an interesting, interactive infographic that illustrates which cities around the country have the biggest limited-English populations. View infographic.
It’s their turn to learn
If English is the language of diplomacy and medicine in the United States, and even the lingua franca of business all around the world, there’s never been a better time than now to introduce your English learners to Imagine Learning. With a special focus on academic language and the five essential components of reading, it spells success for students everywhere.
Have you noticed an increase in the number of English learners in your classroom? If so, what are you doing to help them?

You write “If English is the language of diplomacy and medicine, and even the lingua franca of business all around the world …” That’s a big if. English is one of many lanhguiages in the world. Do you think that medicine is not practised in Spanish, French, German, Chinese and so on.
Exaggerating is not helpful.

Hey Bill, thanks for the comment. You’re correct, the first part of that sentence is a broad generalization. I’ve amended it. However, the point of the infographic and blog post is that Limited-English proficiency in the U.S. is growing and there’s a great opportunity for schools and educators to address this. Also, English is certainly the language of the internet, and in many business settings throughout the world.
