If you had to raise over $20,000 in just two and a half hours, could you do it?
During a recent flash fundraiser held on July 11, 2016, Imagine Learning employees did just that, benefitting four noteworthy charities in the process.
The four beneficiaries chosen by Imagine Learning employees were: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®, Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.), Habitat for Humanity - Utah County, and the Imagine Kids Foundation.
All four organizations were chosen for their ability to help children and families throughout the world.
Each year during Imagine Learning's company-wide Vision Conference, employees participate in an exciting kick-off event. As it turned out, the 2016 event tested employee ingenuity, forged team relationships, and built a great deal of enthusiasm in the process.
Great Place to Work Committee
Teams assemble for brainstorming
Promptly at 3:00 p.m. on July 11th, all employees were given the following challenge:
- Pick a charity to fund.
- Brainstorm a business plan.
- Use $20.00 (included in each team's packet) as seed money--and grow it.
- Tell the story in pictures and in words (all the better to document the fun).
- Return by 5:45 p.m. with funds in hand.
Teams were also told that the winning team (aka, the team raising the most money) would be announced the following day.
It was time to get moving.
The Flash Fundraiser
After fundraising teams created a basic plan for the next couple of hours, they hit the road.
Some teams dressed in costume to better attract the eyes of would-be donors. One team created balloon animals. Another took pictures with patrons outside a shopping mall. One asked passersby to pay a dollar for the privilege of throwing water balloons at a human banana.
Other teams even created GoFundMe campaigns to earn a maximum dollar amount quickly. Still others went door to door, volunteering to do yard work or odd jobs for a charitable contribution.
Utah County citizens were surprised to see so many Imagine Learning employees out in force that afternoon, whether in costume or not. Creativity reigned supreme!
Of course, there were a few setbacks that necessitated finding a new strategy--and some efforts were more fruitful than others. But in the end, each team grew its seed money into a significant contribution.
What's more, after hearing about the fundraiser in progress, the executive team of Weld North LLC (parent company of Imagine Learning) joined in the goodwill, spontaneously contributing some of its own funds to the overall total.
The best part was getting to surprise local and national charities with some sizeable donations on their behalf. There were plenty of smiles to go around as checks were handed to representatives from each organization--as shown below (pictured, L to R: Official logos of the four beneficiaries; at the offices of Underground Operation Railroad; at the Utah County (Orem) ReStore of Habitat for Humanity).
The Importance of Doing Good
Raising money can be a challenge for charitable organizations these days, no matter how important the cause. And there are few causes more worthy than the future of our children.
By raising funds for charities that focus on children and families, Imagine Learning employees gained fresh insights on some truly outstanding organizations. And everyone had a great time in the process. (Pictured below, L to R: Imagine Kids Foundation board members happily acknowledge funds received from Imagine Learning employees).
